River Fire - Brisbane FestivalBrisbane Festival

12 September - 3 October 2010

Taking place over three glorious weeks, the festival will showcase artists from across the city and around the globe in a program that includes free community events, street parties, theatre, music and everything in between.

The biggest festival the city has ever seen now boasts the biggest opening night. Following the fabulous pyrotechnics of QBE Riverfire, charismatic Californian crooner Chris Isaak performs for free in the Botanic Gardens, the QUT Spiegeltent throws opens its doors for the start of three weeks of world class music and cabaret, and the most cutting edge pop sounds from the Asia Pacific fill every corner of the Powerhouse.

QBE Riverfire

Sat 4 September 2010

Brisbane's night of nights returns, bigger and even better, to signal the opening of the largest festival the city has ever seen.

QBE Riverfire promises to be a pyrotechnic and musical extravaganza, bringing the city's skies, buildings, bridges, riverbanks and backyards to life as Brisbane Festival 2009's Opening Night festivities unite hundreds of thousands of people in celebration.

The party will burst into life well before the sun goes down and the roar of the F-111 strike jets signals the start of the spectacular fireworks display. People arriving early to claim the best vantage points will have plenty to keep them entertained with 104.5 Triple M's outside broadcast and the Australian Defence Force putting on a jam-packed programme at South Bank featuring aircraft, drills and live music from 12 noon.

From 5pm the Roulettes will take to the skies, building up to the moment when all eyes are raised to the sky and faces feel the heat as the F-111s sweep low to perform the 'dump and burn'.

Exposed - The Story of Swimwear

22 May to 8 August 2010
Free entry, Level 4

From neck-to-knee to next to nothing!
Exposed! the story of swimwear highlights the designs and designers, past and present, at the forefront of Australian swimwear fashion.

Movie sirens, aquatic stars, models, bathing beauties, athletes, sporting icons, swimmers and designers all played their part in the evolution of the modern swimsuit. Blurring the boundaries between underwear and outerwear, the swimsuit continues to make shock waves.
Exposed! places Australian swimwear in a global context, showing how Australian swimmers and swimwear designers responded to their environment, to the strong local swimming and beach culture, and to international fashion trends.

From the 1900s swimwear evolved from hidden, almost medicinal outfits for bathing and soaking to more functional, fashionable garments – and an essential item of leisurewear. Australian designs reflected changes in taste, customs and international trends.

Woollen Mermaids
From A (Annette Kellerman) to Z (Zimmerman) innovative Australian designers have contributed to the evolution of the modern swimsuit. To thread together the past, the present and the future, the Australian National Maritime Museum invited swimwear designers to create a one-piece black swimsuit in wool elastane using Australia’s original mermaid and champion swimmer, Annette Kellerman, as muse. Some of these designs are showcased in the exhibition.
